The 365 Savasana Project

If I suggested that you put your lengthy to-do list to one side and lie down for twenty minutes right now, what would your response be?

(I think I can hear you shouting that you are too busy from here! But if you’re feeling stressed, frazzled or generally rushed off your feet it may be just what you need.)

Being reminded of the power of Savasana I’ve decided to practice Savasana for 365 consecutive days. I’m inviting you to join me. There is no cost to take part. You don’t even need any yoga experience. Some may call it a challenge. I’m calling it The 365 Savasana Project.

What is 365 Savasana all about?

“You need a holiday,” was my friend’s advice. I knew a holiday anytime soon was not on the cards, but when I got home I did what I could in that moment – I lay down for twenty minutes. Yep, that’s right, Savasana, plain and simple. And you know what? I felt a lot better for it – no longer tired or emotional, my perspective had shifted. “I should do this more”. While I make an effort to get on my yoga mat each day, I admittedly don’t take Savasana every day. Why not when it has the capacity to make such a difference?”

The above is from my Teacher’s Tales column in the September 2014 issue of OM Yoga Magazine. Click here to read the full article.

What is Savasana anyway?

Savasana (or Corpse Pose), lying down in a comfortable position on your back, is often described as the easiest pose to do but the most difficult to master. Lying still for twenty minutes a day may seem unimaginable. But you can start small with just a minute or two and work your way up. You have 365 days to practice!

A restorative Savsasna allows your body to properly rest – something we rarely experience in our day-to-day over-stimulated existence. More than a little nap, Savasana shifts the nervous system into a parasympathetic nervous system state (calming the ‘fight flight’ response and switching on the relaxation response)

Just some of the benefits of Savasana include:

Lowering blood pressure
Stress relief
Calming a busy mind
Improved sleep quality
Promoting proper physical rest and regeneration by stimulating the ‘relaxation response

When does it start?

When YOU choose :). I started Savasana-ing at the start of September 2014 but you can begin whenever you like – it’s not too late. Why not start today and begin counting your 365 days from there?
